Michael Martin, whom Billboard magazine calls the "Guru of Live Greening," will be the keynote speaker for Carroll University's 2024 undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11. Martin, a 1982 graduate of Carroll University, has led the sustainability movement in the event and entertainment industries, and is known for introducing many of the event greening practices used worldwide.

A respected leader and innovator in business-based tech and social change, Martin helped found multiple companies such as Native Energy, Peoples Organic Café and Plantega. These organizations are committed to creating meaningful change in environmental sustainability and healthier living for people and communities.

Currently, Martin is CEO of Effect Partners and r.World. It is r.World’s mission to build the infrastructure, platform and movement for the reuse economy. With the support of globally recognized festivals, promoters and artists (e.g., The Rolling Stones, U2), it operates in 44 cities across seven states. Meanwhile, for more than 30 years, Effect Partners has developed sustainability strategies and campaigns for numerous high-profile clients including Apple, Procter & Gamble, Jim Carrey, Black Eyed Peas and more.

Martin contributed to Earth Day becoming the world’s largest secular event and developed the first-ever national global warming campaign with Ben & Jerry’s and Dave Matthews Band, uniting the nation’s top 20 environmental groups and putting the concept of climate change on the map. He also helped to launch the Prius for Toyota, introduce green energy to this country and grow the plant-based food and organic food movements.

“It’s a tremendous honor to welcome Michael back to Carroll to address our 2024 graduates,” said President Cindy Gnadinger. “As we send off our graduates onto their next journey, it’s invaluable to show them how one of our own – a Carroll grad – has made an incredible impact on the world, helping to create a better future for everyone.”

Between the graduate and undergraduate Commencement ceremonies on Mother’s Day weekend, Carroll University will see approximately 760 students accept their degrees on Main Lawn (100 N. East Ave.). You can find additional details about Commencement 2024 by visiting Carroll’s website.
